I have HSV-1, not sure if I’m having a genital outbreak? Help?
Little backstory, I started having itching & burning in my genital area months and months and months ago, so I go to my OBGYN, each time, there was nothing. OTC yeast creams and creams she prescribed me did nothing.
She did a full STD panel, urinalysis, & yeast/bv swab. I came back all clear, however HSV-1 (cold sores) was reactive. I’ve only ever had cold sores maybe 5 times my entire life, including when I was a child. She told me I probably contracted it from drinking after an adult when I was young. She prescribed me Valtrex 500mg & told me to get boric acid suppositories to help with the itchy feeling (was not having an outbreak, never had a genital outbreak.) I told my partner and he is being so supportive and it doesn’t bother him at all.
Fast forward, I did one round of the suppositories and the itchy discomfort feeling subsided. I’ve been taking Valtrex 500mg once a day for the past two months ( I do this because she said it reduces my chances of having an outbreak or shedding and therefore passing to my partner.)
I have not had oral sex in months, since this issue began. I’ve been with the same person for 6 years and this is the first time this has ever happened. Over the last 5 days, I started getting the itchy feeling again just on one side so I tried another round of the boric acid. It’s still itchy. When I try to examine myself, I have no earthly clue what to look for because any little thing I’m just immediately like oh it’s definitely an outbreak. I googled images of an outbreak but they don’t look like what’s going on? There’s no pain or burning when I pee, I’m not sick, it’s just red and itchy. I can’t tell if I’m looking at the beginnings of an outbreak since I’ve never had a genital one or if I’m letting my anxiety get the best of me?
Would the Valtrex not suppress the chance of me having an outbreak? Waiting for my doctor to return my call but reaching out here because I need a little advice or reassurance or something.
