Does work still need to pay short term disability if you tell them you won’t be back?

I’ve been at my office for about 6 years and recently accepted a job for after my maternity leave. I figured I would just tell my office I won’t be back so they can start looking for somebody else. (I am one of their lead dental assistants). Just curious what you all think?

I wouldn’t have told them till after it was approved and at 4 weeks given my 2 weeks notice

As a family business owner, I would be incredibly frustrated if an employee took advantage of my company by lying about their return.

If they know you’re not coming back they are not going to count your maternity leave. The day you leave is the day you’re no longer working for them. No matter how long you have been there, the only way it would work is if you were very close to your manager and gave them a heads up and they lied for you because most businesses are not that loyal to any employee and from a business sense it doesn’t make sense to pay out short term disability to an employee who is not coming back, it’s a termination. 
Now depending on how you leave you may be able to get unemployment in that between period.
