So I have a brother in law who is on his districts school board. The board is 4 white conservative men.

One parent at a meeting said something about making sure they step out of their comfort zone and hire people of different backgrounds, races, genders. And my BIL replied that he is half Mexican. I actually had never known that. Apparently his biological father is/was Mexican. But his parents split up before he was born so he never met his biological father. He found this out sometime in his teens. But his stepfather raised him and loves him so the family never talks about it.

Is it appropriation to claim diversity by genetics and not culture?

*edit to add he does look white or caucasian.
