First time cloth diapering

Hi Guys!

I plan on cloth diapering with our baby #2! I have one child but didn’t cloth diaper with her - but i really want to this time around.

What would i need to start out? i’m unsure. I know wet bags and cloths diapers. about how many should i buy to start out? and do they come with inserts or sold separately? I looked into it a bit but kinda confused lol. Also any brand suggestions for anything i need please!

Agree with other commenter, it depends what type of diaper what all you'll need. I will say most pockets or "AIO" styles don't fit well until baby is at least 10lbs unless you purchase a separate newborn size, which can feel like a lot of money for just a few weeks of use. With my first we did disposables until she put on enough weight, then switched to cloth and I think it was a wise choice. We do prefolds and covers (secured with a product called a Snappi) because they are the easiest for me to wash, and you need way fewer covers. Since I'm already comfortable with the system and have all the bigger sizes from last time, I got 2 dozen newborn prefolds and 4 covers which gets you 12 diapers a day for every other day laundry, or 8 for every 3 days.So for my particular setup I have:- 20ish prefolds in each size - 4-6 covers- 3 Snappis- 24ish cloth wipes (might as well if you're washing everything else!)-2 large wet bags-2 medium wet bags for outingsMy favorite website for all of this is Green Mountain Diapers!

There's several kinds of cloth diapers. All in ones are the easiest, they already have sewn in inserts so once you take it off baby, you put it straight in the wet bag. There's pockets, you put and insert in between the lining and out shell of the diapers. These are the most common you'll find and more affordable than AIO's. You'll need to remove the insert before washing. Then there's covers and prefolds. You put a folded cloth in the cover and you can reuse the cover if it's not super wet or poopy when you change baby. You just take out the prefold and put a new one in the cover. I try to wash everyday, if not every other. I do a sanitize load on the washer and use lysol laundry sanitizer. We just dry them in our dryer. It always comes out really clean and never irritates my boys skin. We change their diapers about every 2 hours, 3 tops.In terms of how many you should get, it depends on the style of cloth diapering you want to do. AIO's and pockets, you'll want maybe 8 per day for a newborn, down to 5 a day for older babes. Covers and prefolds, maybe 5 covers and 8-10 prefolds per day. My favorite brand is Thirsties, I haven't shopped around a whole bunch of different brands but they're very reliable and I love the fit. Plus they're local to me 😊 As for overnight, we used to do cloth but I hated how bulky it could be with the extra reinforcement so we just use disposables.

Some questions I didn't answer, maybe get 4-5 wet bags. As for inserts, usually pockets will include at least one with the diaper. Covers and prefolds are generally sold separately.
