Period change since having a baby/turning 40?

I notice a huge change in my periods since I had my baby 2 years ago but I realise it could also be down to my age. I now experience really really bad pains for at least a week to 8 days before they come then 6 days of serious bleeding and pains when they do come. I'm starting to feel like it's always around somehow as much as I really don't want to be seeing it at all now while ttc! I'm just asking has anyone else noticed this is it normal or should I see a doctor. Prior to having my child my period would last 4 days and very little cramps, maybe a couple on the first day, that's it. I haven't conceived in the 7 or 8 months of trying either and I'm starting to think maybe something up because rof the big changes in my cycle too?
