Pregnant Special Ed Teachers: should they be more cautious than usual around their students?

My question is due to an experience that my sister had at school. She's not a special needs child, but she saw what occured. She told me that a special child became angry because the teacher tried to stop him from throwing dirt at kids during recess (5th graders) and he punched her in the stomach, and the teacher ended up losing her baby..

Totally depends on the child, but if they're prone to be violent they should be careful anyway. One of my friends had months of work because she got whiplash from being thrown across the room

I have worked with special needs kids. If I had a kid in my care who was prone to violence I would let the school know I need a reassignment during the pregnancy.

Somethimes it's not even their tantrums you have to worry about. My grandmother is an OT & one of her co workers ended up seriously hurt(her & her unborn child) by one of the special needs students. He was so excited to see her that he jumped on her as if she was supposed to catch him in her arms. They don't always know their own strength, so being a little more careful & cautious around them is necessary.

Yes they should be extra careful. I'm pregnant and I work with special needs kids and this one child likes to punch us in our stomachs when he gets angry. Since there are two other teachers in the room and only 5 kids I try avoid him as much as I can because if he hits me in my stomach there's no telling how I may react because I'm determined to protect my baby. There was also a situation where a special needs child was pushing a teacher who was 8 months pregnant into the lockers and the child was huge, so yes they need to be extra careful and they have every right to protect themselves.

I am an 8:1:1 teacher of students with emotional and behavioral special needs. While my classroom is safe 99% of the time, there are occasions when a child will become distraught and physically aggressive. When this happens I call for the assistance of another adult. My administration has been aware of my pregnancy from the beginning and a "light duty" was put in place. This prevents me from having to participate in restraints or remain in a potentially dangerous situation.

Yes. 100% yes. Just because they have special needs doesn't mean you don't have a right to protect yourself. I'd sue that child's family if it had been me that lost my baby. I do not stand for violence, even if people say they "can't" control it. Nope. That kind of thinking is what makes children like that think its okay. I have a special needs cousin who never got punished for choking my little brother. He never learns. So I'd ask for a different assignment if I knew I had a child in the class that was violent.

It's not something you can hold against a student. I am not a special education teacher but they got rid of ebd (emotional and behavior disorder) classrooms. I had a student who is served for ebd get angry at me because i asked him to please stop talking and he went from 0-100 in 2 seconds flat and threw a trash can at me. Luckily he missed and ran in the hallway so his case worker was able to get him calmed. He came up to me later and we were fine. It's scary and hard to not hold it against them but most of the time they really can't help it.

Children can be agressive whether they have special needs or not, all child need a eye kept on them, you never know what can happen. Im sorry that woman lost a child, i dont know how i would be able the cope in that situation

I would be, but I work in an alternative high-school. Sometimes my kids are just there because they can't handle the regular educational setting, and sometimes they're there for fighting, weapons, drugs etc. Depends.
