How to know fetal position?

How does everyone know baby’s position? Doctor’s physical exam? Ultrasound? I’m 31+2 weeks and i have no idea if she’s head down, transverse or breech.

If baby’s head is down you should feel most of your kicks/movements up by your ribs or side

Feel your belly. If you feel something long and hard, it’s probably baby’s body. Where do you feel the most movement? If it’s up high by your ribs or on your sides those are probably the feet. Little movements by your pelvis would be hands. 
My midwife says she can tell difference between head and butt because head moves independently and butt moves with the babies body. 
I googled how to find babies position when I was around 28 weeks. I think it’s called belly mapping ..?? And yea my baby has been head-down since then already.

My doctor told me, and then it was confirmed by ultrasound. I thought my baby was head down around 34 weeks, but she was still transverse until 36 weeks, so I definitely couldn’t tell myself.

I go off when I feel hiccups. She's mostly head down but occasionally will turn sideways ( which also tends to be more painful)
