Positive covid home test

My dad was telling us of a friend of his that woke up last Thursday morning with a bad headache a d chills, he said he took a home covid test and it showed positive. He decided to go to the doctor and test and the doctor said it was negative. Can the home tests show a positive when you aren't really positive?
