Winter Newborns

Moms who had newborns in the winter and other children, how did you manage to protect your child against the elements? Did you take them outside right away?

I don't have a car and I plan to put my preschooler in preschool. It's a 12-13 walk everyday 2x a day (pickup/drop off)and I will also have a newborn. I don't want my newborn to get sick at all especially before the 2 month shots. I know I won't be taking any of them in extreme weather.
