Strange lower abdomen pain

Soo recently around my period I've been getting these random shocks of pain in my lower abdomen before and during my period. They resemble normal period cramps at first but then after a while they randomly appear as sharp pains and sometimes run up to my stomach. My period does tend to be very violent, meaning I get extremely painful cramps, most of the time right before my period starts and during the first day I start and my period will also usually be Very heavy.  Anybody have any idea what they are? Should I get checked out?? Can they just be cramps?
