Called "fat" while pregnant

Crystal

Today I was called fat by my father-in-law. My husband told his dad, "Crystal's pregnant." His dad responded laughing, "It's an inside joke". My husband asked, "What's that supposed to mean?'" And his dad just kept laughing. I have no idea what that means.

Before pregnancy, I was always fairly small. But I have gained a significant amount of weight during pregnancy. I'm currently 26 weeks and being larger has affected my self esteem quite a bit. I was really taken back by being called fat. This is my inlaws first grandchild and my rainbow baby. I have struggled to conceive and this pregnancy has been very special (but stressful) for me.

My father-in-law has never congratulated me on my pregnancy or talked about the baby. He has always been very cruel about his wife's appearance, critical of what I look like, and is obsessed with commenting about other women's bodies. Whenever he says something rude or offensive its brushed off as "He doesn't have a filter. That's just Bob being Bob." I don't want this man to feel like he can talk to my daughter this way one day or continue to talk about me like this.

How do I go about talking to someone who feels like he can say whatever he wants, whenever he wants to?
