Please help! Breastfeeding

Kelsie

My little girl is currently 6 days old, I have been Breastfeeding since she was born. She attached really well and was feeding every 2-3 hours for about 30/40 minutes for the first 3-4 days. However, my milk supply is now out of control. She has now started refusing to take to my breast because of how fast my milk comes out. She starts coughing, spluttering, she spits a lot of it back up. And as soon as she pulls away from the Breast, milk starts pouring everywhere. Because of how much milk I am producing, she cannot empty a full breast. Therefore, she’s not getting the fatty part of milk which comes in towards the end of a feed. She’s started to get really gassy, as well as hiccups frequently. My midwife suggests that I empty my breasts after a feed by pumping, however I can never fully empty my breasts. I could pump for 2-5 minutes and get 5oz. However the milk never slows down, my breasts are becoming so large and engorged. Which is physically painful for me.

I’m not sure what I can do, I want to carry on breast feeding my little girl. But because of her refusing to latch or when she does it’s only a 5 minute feed before she’s done, I’m having to use bottles. I don’t want to carry on pumping my breasts incase it is signalling to my body to produce more milk than it already is, but I also don’t want to not pump and my breasts be extremely painful and hard/feeling full.
