If you are going to test early, I suggest you use sensitive tests (10mui) as that'll give you the best chance to see a positive. I personally used One Step strips and got my initial postive at 8DPO for my last two pregnancies. 
Just remember, if it's negative at this point, that doesn't mean you aren't pregnant but it just might be too early to show. If you can remain optimistic and won't be discouraged, there's no harm in early testing.

10 to 12 dpo is usually better but you can start seeing at 9 dpo if you've implanted and hcg has risen enough to be detected

You can get a positive, but there's more than a 50% chance that it would be too early to show up on the test if you are pregnant.
