is it normal to not have a first ultrasound and heartbeat check until 12+ weeks??

I paid to have a private scan done - only £50 and it gives you your accurate due date as well :) I had one done with my son, and I'm having one done on Saturday with this baby :)

My doctor hasn't given me one yet. My next appointment is June 11 and I will be 12 weeks. I think they are just checking the heartbeat. I'm not even sure if I will get an ultrasound then? I just wanna see the baby!
