When to start taking birth control?

When getting put on tri-Sprintec, my doctor failed to tell me when to start the medication. I've been taking it for almost three weeks now, but I'm a little scared it won't prevent pregnancy. I started taking it the day after my period stopped. What if my period is irregular and I end up taking the wrong pills?? Help please?

I'm pretty sure you are supposed to start the day after your period ends. The pills you take during your period are"sugar pills" and have no effect. If you started the day after your period you should be good! I would still use another form of contraceptive for a week or two just to be on the safe side. I believe they take effect after 1 week.

Well if you started taking it the day your period started than it would have been effective immediately. Since you did not a general rule of thumb is that it is not effective for at least two weeks. Your period may be different now that your starting birth control but you should still get your period on you "blank" pills.
