How many days is maternity leave in US?

Hi girls. I am new in the US and I live in Michigan. Do you know haw many days before and after having the baby I could get at work? And when is it convenient to tell your boss and coworkers that you are pregnant. My job is very calm in an office so no worries about lifting or so. Thank you :)

Under fmla if you're employed for one year when you give birth you get 12 weeks. Some employers will offer more and pay is up to the employer. I told my employer at 10 weeks :)

FMLA requires them to hold your position for 12 weeks but that is entirely unpaid. So they can't fire you or replace you within the 12 weeks but they do not have to pay you. I will be taking the 12 weeks unpaid and then be going back. Some companies have benefits that include paid leave but it is not mandatory by law so it depends on your company.

I hate to say this but I think I would go nuts if I actually took 50 weeks off work and stayed home while only collecting 60% pay. ?

Omg I couldn't not imagine that short of time! Makes me realize I am super lucky at my job here in canada. I'm going off approx one month early on medical (100% pay)  and then my maternity leave begins day you give birth. If I get a note from dr I can get medical top up for 12 weeks to 100% after birth.....

FMLA is only relevant if the company has over 50 employees.  Mine does not.  6 weeks is the standard.

Wow I can't believe how short of time you guys get in the states! We can apply for employment insurance here in Canada as long as you work so many hours (it's not that much) and then you get 50 weeks off paid at about 60% (or more can't remember) of your normal wages every two weeks. Since I work in healthcare and have a permanent position it will still be there when I come back there are places where your job may not be guaranteed when you decide to come back. Also my union tops me up to 100% for the first 15 weeks.

It's not the same everywhere in the US. It really depends on the company you work for. My company offers 12 weeks, however, the typical time is 4-6 weeks.

It's different at every company but typically it's 6 weeks for vaginal delivery and 8 weeks for c section. I asked my doc when I have to tell work about pregnancy and they said when I feel comfortable doing so. I also live in MI. congrats ?
