In my marriage we have opposite sex friends, but they are mutual friends who we hang out with together.  We never hang out one on one with someone of the opposite sex... Not because we don't trust each other, but out of respect for each other and because we don't know the other persons intentions.

If you don't trust your partner, it seems pointless to keep up an exclusive relationship with them anyway. If they're committed to you, nothing will happen when they hang around with their preferred gender one on one. Nobody can force them to cheat. I trust my bf 100% and vice versa. I'd probably break up with anyone who arbitrarily decided I couldn't hang out with my opposite sex friends anymore. That's not an equal relationship--it's a desire for control usually born from internal anxiety.

My boyfriend has always been friends with more girls than guys, so when he hangs out with those girls, even one on one, I'm ok with it. I trust him and I know they've been friends for years. However, I wouldnt be too happy if he started hanging out with a new girl... Especially since my boyfriend and I started out as just friends.
