Late period and spotting

I spotted on the 16th of July the day before my period was due to arrive. Three weeks late and two negative test, what could be happening? I have been having period pains since a week before my AF was due and still going on, although they are really mild and not painful. I'm also on an emotional rollarcoaster of hormonal lol.
