5 yr old Pap smear?

My daughter is 5 years old. She keeps saying that her "pee" hurts, meaning her vagina. I've looked at it and I notice it's red but nothing else. I'm really hesitant to take her to a doctor to get checked because I feel if they have to look down there or possibly inside, she could be traumatized. Will they knock her out for it? I notice she holds her urine till she really has to go and when she pees she wipes back to front, not when she poops though. I'm having a really hard time explaining to her the correct way and have even let her watch me but she still does it the wrong way. Has anyone had this experience or advice?
