What are your thoughts on the education system?

Exams? No exams? Do you think they care about grades more? Do you think they care if the individual is learning or not?

I don't believe there should be "pass or fail" exams because that just isn't realistic. Everyone has different styles of learning and interacting.

​If there must be exams then there should maybe be different ways to take it. That way children will learn the same material but also embrace their individuality.

The public school system is the US sucks.

We need smaller classes (1 teacher for 20+ students is waaaaaay off balance) that could actually give kids individual attention.

We need less focus on testing, more focus on actually retaining information.

We need to foster a true love of learning and curiosity in all children. (All toddlers I've met have it..it disappears as they get older)

We need to stop cutting fine arts, language and other 'special' subjects. There are so many things to learn out there, why restrict our kids? Bullshit that there just isn't room in the schedule.

Its sad. Kids should love learning, and have areas of interest that are encouraged in school. This is how you build adults who will look for answers to our world's problems with passion.

Oh! The school that my niece goes to, it's a requirement to have an ipad and that's where they do all their work. The only time she uses a pen/pencil is when she has a test, about once a week!

As a highschooler in the US public schools (who ALSO had private school education), the school system really really sucks. The level of pressure put upon me made me cry many nights and there were days I was so depressed I thought of some dark ideas (thankfully I didn't act upon them). I understand the need to educate for the real world but I believe the system forgets that they are dealing with hormonal TEENS! TEENS! For those who say stress isn't a problem... my school suffered 2 suicides last year, one of whom was my close friend. I just wish that maybe the stress level was toned down and that the importance wasn't put on tests and grades but on learning. Most kids cheat not because they are lazy but because they are desperate.

I think they are over thinking things these days. First grade math is a joke! Now, instead of 9+8=17, you have to give the answer and then explain why 9+8=17. I understand explaining why the answer to this 5 step math problem is the answer, but what the hell happened to just sticking with basic math?

I work in elementary education. I agree that kids are over-tested. However, we can only individualize education so much. The district I work for has bought into a reading/writing/spelling program that is entirely based on student choice, and it is AWFUL. The kids choose to write whatever they want, and we can't assign the class to write a research paper, or a business letter. They get to free write about whatever they want. And we also cannot assign whole-class novels. The workload for a teacher who has 100 kids reading 100 different books and writing 100 different writing pieces on TOTALLY different topics is appalling.
