Based on personal experience with pain and healing, which do you think is better?

Tearing... Neither always happen. Midwives do a good job of preventing it. Doctors don't care as much. Water births lower the risk to tear significantly.

If your midwifes works good you'll have none of it. Epi was done often once, but not anymore so often here in Europe. Because it's not necassary at 80% of birth.

My midwife put it like this. If you try and tear a sheet you can pull and pull and eventually it might give but it's difficult. If you cut it first and then give a good pull it will rip much easier. Basically, episiotomy leads to more issues with severe severe tearing. Much worse than it needed to be.

Episiotomy gives a nice straight cut to stitch up. Ripping is messy and harder to stitch. But my midwife said it's worth it to take the time to stich a messy cut than to deal with severe high degree tearing.

I would never let them give me an episiotomy. That's the only part of my birth plan I stuck to lol.

I had to have an episiotomy as my 9lb9oz baby was posterior and got stuck in my pelvis. Five days after I delivered, my stitches tore and I hv a gaping space in my labia. The scar tissue has a weird sensation. The healing took 5.5 months. It was traumatic. I suggest a tincture called hypercal (hypericum and calendula) diluted in water and sprayed onto the wound from a spray bottle. It helps with pain inflammation and healing.
