Do you think it's okay, to give a son your father's last name of your father never had sons?

My dad is the last male in our family line, if I take a man's last name when I get married the name dies with my dad as he only had girls. I'm thinking, if my future SO is okay with it, that I'll give one of our sons my dads last name.

Is that something you would consider okay or not?

Do it if it's what you and SO want. My Dad only had three girls no boys. My sisters and I all took our husbands last name but kept our maiden name as the middle name. With each new baby my sisters and I have, they all have the same middle name which is our maiden name. It's special to me because it's who I was before I was married and happy to pass it on to my children. But everyone is different and you should do what makes you and SO happy.

im latin so we usually use the first last name of both of the parents for example my two last names are Salinas-Madrid.. salinas is my dads and madrid is my moms but me personally when i had my daughter i used my mothers last name since she raised me and i felt she deserved it more

You actually don't have to change your last name when you get married. You could do both your last name & the man's you marry. That way you're also covered if the man you marry also happens to be the last son in his family.

I find that odd. I love and respect my dad, but I love and respect my husband even more. Not giving our son, our last name just doesn't even make sense. Men are proud of their children and I imagine my husband would be extremely offended at the thought or not giving one of his children our last name. Then you have to explain to everyone that your husband is the real father, not a step father, you get questioned about being the biological parent as well, the child won't understand for many years, and when the do they might not be accepting of it. It just seems like a huge mess of an idea to me.

Hmm I don't like the idea. Your son should have the same last name as you their own dad and their siblings. If you just do it with one then they might think it's odd. It could cause a lot of confusion. Does your dad really care? And I'd be surprised if a SO was happy with this but hey, if he is and you are then it's totally your choice :) but you could just incorporate your dads name into a sons middle name

Going to be honest, the line ends at ur dad because ur child to be is a stem of a new blood line. Even if u have ur child I'm guessing ur current last name it wouldn't be a true line. I'm engaged and gave and will give both of my children there dads last name since they are of that line. That's just my thought on it.

Maybe give your kids your dad's last name as a middle name and your SO's as their last name. I don't know any guy who wouldn't want their child to have their own last name.

I was raised with my mom's maiden name and my Dad's last name hyphenated. Hated it my whole life because my parents were divorced and I don't get along with my dad, so I kind of dropped his last name and then dropped both and took on my husband's when I got married.

Depending on the name, you might be able to use it as a middle name instead. My mother's family has at least one 'family name' like that: the daughter of an ancestor used her maiden-name as a middle name for one of her children, and it survives to this day as a given name.
