Is taking prenatal vitamins while TTC a good idea? And why or why not?

While TTC is it a good idea to start taking prenatal vitamins? Can it increase the chance of a positive result? Will it just give my future baby a healthy head start? Or may this cause some kind of negative affect on my body? I just want to make sure it won't be a waste of time or money

You are supposed to take them for 6 months to a year before you start ttc. Most if it is the same stuff in a regular multi vitamin.

Decreases the chance of neural tube defects while the embryo is in early development.....a lot of organ formation has occurred before you usually even get a bfp (5-6 weeks), definitely important!! And no, they won't harm you at all

There isn't anything in them that has been shown to have negative long term effects in the doses given,  that I can find.  Plus,  they are supposed to be good for your hair and nails.  My dr rx'ed me a prenatal in October and I had previously been taking an otc prenatal vitamin.  The rx is way cheaper than otc with my insurance,  too.
