A few months ago my bf brought up that he wanted to use his tax return to buy me an engagement ring. He let me know how much he usually got back and I went and found the ring I wanted.

He ended up getting screwed over in his return and got back $500 less than he was expecting and asked if I would cover the rest of the ring. We're both very excited and want to start telling friends and family. It upset me that he asked me to pitch in, but I'm not sure why because when we're married what's mine is his and what's his is mine, so should it matter?
