Should teens be stopped from making mistakes?

Parents these days seem very overprotective, as im sure they've always been, but it's to a point where teens have no way of experiencing their life to discover their values. Do you think parents should continue to attempt to keep kids from making mistakes, or should try let life take its course and teach teens important lessons?

Nope, they need to face consequences for repeated mistakes..especially when they know it's wrong.

You can't stop your kids from doing EVERYTHING, but, you can raise them with values and morals and the knowledge to make mature, adult decisions about the things they try and do, with knowing what the consequences are. Either way, they will do what they want to do, and you can't keep them on the leash, you just have to hope you instill enough knowledge in them to make the right decision,  and hope that any bad decisions they make don't end up with extreme consequences.

I worked with a young woman a long time ago. Every time she was assigned a detention or failed a class her mother raised hell and tried to get everything overturned. The child never learned any lessons about accoutabilty. Many of her classmates went on to college and she is just siting at her moms house doing nothing. She can't even hold down part time work and it's been quite a few years. It makes me sad because she had a ton of potential, but didn't have any sense of personal accountability or drive.  I definitely think her parent's choices had an impact on her attitude.

That being said, I think kids need to fail sometimes. It's how they learn from life.  Sure, some mistakes are bigger than others and intervention is necessary, but if a kid messes up, you have to let them have consequences.

I think that would be literally impossible to do. You can set limits and guidelines, but every kid tests limits and boundaries some way or another. I did a lot of really stupid things as a teenager, and at the same time, I learned some hard lessons. If it was a mistake that was actually preventable (like the time I thought dropping out of high school at 16 was a super idea,) I think most parents would try their hardest to protect their kids from doing something that would negatively impact their future.

For the record, I didn't drop out of school, and the older I get, the more I admit that my dad was right more often than not.

From what I've seen, parents need to pay better attention to their teens. They aren't monitored online, the aren't told they can't watch certain shows and movies, parents these days ate So self involved most of them don't even know what their teens ate doing anymore.

My mom always said "you don't have to break your arm to know it hurts!" It didn't stop me from breaking my arm, or from her making me sleep with it overnight haha. Accidents happen. Sometimes you do have to learn a hard and painful lesson for yourself.

Honestly, teenagers realize that even when their parents give them one option (ex: you are not allowed to date) there is ALWAYS a second option: do whatever the hell you want. Obviously it's good for parents to guide their children, but the more controlling and restricting parents are, the more rebellious the kids get. I'd personally rather my kid do something I don't like with my knowledge than them do it secretly and without my support. (Ex: I don't want you to have sex, but if you decide to, I'll support you by getting you protection etc.)

It's our job as parents to give our kids a solid foundation for making good decisions, but they also have to be free to experience some bad choices, and the resulting consequences. That's imperative to raising a child who will become a decent adult.
