SO was adopted.... how to trace his background? Please help

My so was adopted and we know nothing of his ethnicity/heritage. I keep thinking if or when we conceive our child won't know itself. My so suffers from this everyday. The adoption was closed and nobody in the family will open about it. Any suggestions?

I'm also adopted, closed. I was able to file some forms with the county I was adopted in to get some non identifying information. I also registered on adoption.com I believe and my birth mother found my post and emailed me about it and then we met. Filed some more papers all three of us to gain identifying information. Do you know if your SO was adopted threw a private agency or a county agency?
