If a guy told you he needs space, what does it really means?

In my experience it means they wanna keep you on the hook while they see what else is out there. Usually there's a specific "what else" around.

My ex said this so we took a "break" next thing I know he is dating someone else.

My fiancé says it to me when he has a bad day cause he doesn't want to take it out on me so he will go fishing or go hang out with his brothers or close friends.

To me it depends on the guy, my ex was a lying, manipulative, asshat who cared only about himself and disregarded and of my feelings. My fiancé isn't one to beat around the bush, if I'm annoying him, he tells me. If I'm making him mad or upset, he tells me. We argue but we never yell at eachother like my ex and I did. It's honestly just depends on the guy
