mandatory blood test?

I'm 18 wks an at my appointment I was told I had to have a blood test done, can't remember the name but I know it was for downsyndrom, spinabifida an some others. When I asked if this is a new test or because of my age I'm 38 she said it is mandatory I can't say no an never really gave a clear response.

No testing is mandatory!!! I would search for a new doc who discusses decision with you and doesn't do anything that you don't want!

It is not mandatory! I am 36 and they gave me the option but it is up to me to decide. My result from regular blood work came at 1 in 12400 to have a baby with down syndrome. We decided not to have the additional blood work to be sure at 99%. We love our baby as it is! ( it is also not covered by insurance and costs $1000)

Dr asked me to take the blood test maternity 21. It can tell if your baby has downs, and 2 other chromosomal abnormalities. It also tells the sex of the baby. I declined it because my insurance did not cover it and it's like a 2,000 test. They did the test any way on accident. They paid for it. Baby is fine and we are having a boy! But definitely not mandatory. They just recommend it after 35. Also Drs push it after 35 bc risk goes up.

I wish I had known this that day  thank you all, I understand wanting to treat or prepare for anything that might occur but ya I was really taken aback by "mandatory"  completely caught me off guard. The whole time I was thinking what? since when do I not have the right to decline any treatment ect? . Well what is done is done regardless this baby will be loved.

You can decline anything. I'm 37 and my insurance covered it 100%

Blood tests they do are kinda mandatory but you can decline some like I did , I declined the Down syndrome one and cystic fibrosis one , other than that to ensure your health your supposed to get one either every or every other visit
