Easter Basket ?

Okay so i'm sorry if I sound dumb but I wasn't raised with these customs but I'd really like to do them for my daughter , 
Okay so whats with moms making these " easter baskets " for their kids ? I think it's really creative and i'm not sure when easter is but since my baby is due this month i'd love to make her one but before I do I would like to know why mom's do this ? What's the meaning behind it ?

Actually Easter as we "know" and "celebrate" today is a Pagan holiday which rejoices in new life and the coming of Spring. Hence eggs and rabbits. Both signs of spring and new life. Easter as was intended by Christianity is about Jesus Christ's foretold resurrection from the dead and ascension to Heaven. How those two holidays got combined into today's Easter is beyond me. Lol We give gift baskets to our kids because it's a commercialized holiday - there isn't really any direct meaning behind it at all. You could probably say that the baskets are a gift from the "Easter Bunny" as a part of him bringing Spring to children all over... ? Yeah, that's the best I've got. :)

Easter is tomorrow on the 5th.
My mom always put together little baskets with some goodies for us, she used to tell my sister the Easter bunny left it for her. Then we would go to my grandparents for my sister to hunt for eggs that we previously dyed.

I'm pretty sure Easter is a Catholic holiday but probably like other holidays with gifts, these seem to get more attention than the actual meaning. I honestly don't know the connection with the Easter Bunny and the actual meaning of the holiday!!
