I'm excited about breastfeeding but my MIL keeps telling me how painful it is, and how she never did it because it hurt. And now I'm kind of scared.

I was told by many that the first feeding is somewhat painful bc your body is allowing the milk to flow through the ducts for the first official time and your nipple will be sore for a few days just bc it's not use to it. But the pain in the uterus is bc it helps release the hormones needed to shrink it back to its normal size so it's done a little quicker. I'm not a fan of pain at all but I'm still going to breast feed

Gotta love how people feel the need to tell you all the bad bits. Yes, breastfeeding can hurt at first, but it doesn't stay painful for the vast majority of women. Labor hurts, but it's temporary. Being pregnant sucks. But the end result is worthy it!

Let me put it this way, never heard anyone tell me it was painless. Not to say it's super painful, but it is uncomfortable from what I understand. Our docs and doula say it doesn't come easy to many and requires work. That being said, I'm a first time mom and plan to stick it out, either way

After I had my daughter I begin to breastfeed about 3 hours after she was born. No pain in my breast but I definitely felt my uterus contracting (shrinking) It mostly felt like menstrual cramps. I always pumped so I didn't have any problems with my breast.

Yes it does at first.Just like exercise your body has to get used to the physical demands if nursing but it stops hurting after a few days and its worth it to you and baby.

You got some decent answers but I just want to focus on something for you "she said it hurt so much she NEVER tried it" so she is telling you something that she has no first hand knowledge about. Not something I would take seriously just on that basis alone. But as mentioned, after birth it helps your uterus to contract, that hurts and is also something that will happen no matter what, it just helps it happen faster and more efficiently.

So, yes and no! Breastfeeding in the beginning does cause contractions that are ment to help shrink your uterus back down. You'll have them regardless of breastfeeding though but breastfeeding makes it happen faster and compred to actual childbirth it doesn't really hurt! You will probably also have some sore nipples for a bit and that can be painful. You go from very little if any nipple stimulation to a whole lot over night so there is bound to be some soreness but the benifits for baby really make it worth it. If you can't do it don't stress!! Formula fed babys do perfectly fine too! Good luck :)

I just want to clarify it only hurts until your nipples gets used to it. As long as you have the right latch it will not hurt at all after your nipples get used to it.

It is painful at first for some people but have the lactation specialist come in and help in the hospital. It mostly hurts when you do not get a proper latch.
