Privilege or right?

My sister and her ex are young, soon to be parents. The father is saying he will be involved and his family is very involved with the pregnancy but he also has sad horrible things about the pregnancy, child and my sister. He wants the baby to have his last name, is that a privilege or a right that the baby has his last name even if they are unwed.

Regardless of whether it's a privilege or a right, this decision is between your sister and her ex. Sadly, you don't get a say and whatever the decision is in the end, the best thing you can do is support your sister by supporting their decision.

It is not a right. Neither is the mother's name. The baby needs a last name, but it does not 'have' to be his (or hers!). That is something the mother has to decide. If they are not married and she does not want him to be a part of their lives, then the baby shouldn't have his name either. If he will be involved, then the two of them have to come to an agreement.

My partner and I are unmarried and out little one will have both our names however we are still very much a couple so it depends on what their relationship is like.
If I was single I'd be very wary of giving her just my partners name as it's not as easy to change if you want to down the line.

More than likely she'll end up raising this child on her own. It'll be much easier for her and her child to have the same last name. I wouldn't give my child the father's last name unless Married. Then we'd all have the same name. I grew up with my dad's last name who wasn't involved it's like what's the point?

I'd say it's a privilege because if he ends up not being apart of the baby's life or he turns out to be a crappy dad I would say have the baby have your sisters last name. Any man can make a baby but it's takes a real man to be a dad

In MA at least, the mother has the say at birth but if the father is active and involved he can go to court to get the last name hyphenated.
