Period and pregnancy?

So I've heard that you can be pregnant and have a period, is this true? If so, how would you know if you're not pregnant simply on waiting to start your period if you can have a period and still be pregnant? How do you know the difference?

Ive heard you can.. my poor aunt had periods for like 5 months of one of her pregnancies and didnt even notice till she went to the hospital for something and during a routine pee test found out! Another of her pregnancies she was having a bout of no periods due to her PCOS and still got pregnant without a period lol.

My mother had what she describes as periods all the way through every pregnancy. She found out she was pregnant by accident every time.
