do you talk about social issues in your household?

i would like to know how many people get taught about social issues by their parents or guardian. this is very important to me because i was never taught about anything like this by my parents. i had to find out in my own.

I went from a color-blind 'freedom and equality for all' environment (my mom) to a buttoned up conservative 'talking about race in any form makes us uncomfortable' and 'if you have sex you'll get pregnant and die' environment (her parents). Socially, I had alot of stuff to unpack before I could learn better. Now, in my house, social issues are a constant daily discussion. It breaks my heart sometimes because my eldest is so innocent and pure and I have to be the one to sully her grand and high opinion of the world and how it works.

My dad talked about these things often, and usually got pretty fired up about politics, social justice issues, minority rights, war and poverty. I wouldn't say I'm as liberal as my father, and he's even toned it down in recent years, but he influenced me a lot. He was always really good about getting us to read the Smithsonian and the National Geographic. He also made us write reports on politics, current events and influential people, which, while I didn't appreciate the extra work load at the time, I certainly do now and intend to do the same with my children.

Oh yes! My uncle was a representative and a senator. My dad is a police officer and also in the army. I grew up in a very open family. I was 8 and was learning all the political mumbo-jumbo, was talking about the issues in other countries, was debating very personal issues with family members. I'm very thankful that my family talked about what was going on. I learned to always do my research before speaking about something controversial, don't vote off a whim, and never push your beliefs down someone's throat. You can voice your opinion but also accept and appreciate others opinions as well. When my kids are old enough to understand, I will talk to them about stuff, especially issues that might have an effect on their future.

Yes. My hubby and I have discussions (and sometimes even debate) about social issues all the time. Our younger 3 kids aren't interested just yet. However, our 13 year old is very opinionated and often joins in our discussions.
