Young doctor?

I was just reading about my ob and realized he just finished his residency in 2014.  He will be performing my c section and removal of a large cyst.

Should I be concerned about his age or experience level?  Anyone with a medical background have experience with newer OBs?  I'm getting really nervous now...

I work with Doctors in Training. If they've passed their residency exams and are deemed to be safe to work on your own - they're fine. I find that younger doctors are less cocky and more thorough. They are also up to date with training and new techniques.

But - if you're not comfortable, find someone else.

In my opinion, it's the fresh graduates who are very very very well educated on the newest scientifically based evidenced practices. They are taught the latest and greatest methods and might offer a different or unique insight into certain things. Where as an older physician might be stuck in their ways and not as open to newer techniques. Either way, both are licensed have passed boards and can be trusted. You have every right to be skeptical but in the end make sure you are comfortable with your doctor and trust their judgement.

I think the up side to a young doc is that they are up to date with all the newest techniques and procedures.

I'm not an ob but I am a doctor.  I'm 3 years out of residency. Residency training is gruiling.  I can assure you that if he finished residency he got more than enough training to be able to do this.  But if you still feel uncomfortable you should find another ob. Wishing you a healthy pregnancy.

I don't have medical experience, but I did have an ectopic with emergency surgery in October. My OB is old school, totally. Had it been up to him I would have gotten basically a c-section instead of the laparoscopic procedure I was able to have because a much younger female doctor assisted him. I don't think she was quite as young as your OB, but I can't imagine she's been out of med school for more than 5 years. I am grateful she was there because otherwise I would have had a much more hellish recovery, and probably wouldn't be pregnant with my little girl!

I actually purposely chose my sons pediatrician because he was basically fresh out of med school. The way I figure is they have been taught the most current information, and while they may not have the experience, they can always consult an older doctor for advice, but they're more open to advice than a doctor who's "seen it all" and knows everything, and therefore refuses to ask or take advice. My first OB was an old hat, she knew everything and had seen it all, she was worn out and bored and I HATED her. I didn't really think I could change so I didn't, and I regret it.

I would say don't judge a doctor based on years of experience, make your decision based on how they make you feel. If they make you feel like shit, they're not the right doctor for you. If they're right in line with what you would like your plan to be, they're probably the right person for you.

He got his degree. He's been through YEARS of training. You're in good hands. They don't just hand out medical degrees like candy. ;)

Personally I would feel more comfortable with someone who's performed both of these surgeries a few times in the past and has just little more hands on experience but that's my opinion. Good luck on your decision.
