If you aren't married should you give the child the fathers last name?

His last name isn't his original last name. He was adopted. He wants the baby to have his adopted last name but I don't agree. I think the baby should have my last name or his original last name especially since we aren't married.

Hyphenate! Your last name + his last name (the one he goes by...not his birth name).

My parents couldn't agree and hyphenated my last name. It was the bane of my existence. Always causing problems with my health insurance and in school all the way up to my passport application. 
They would also get butthurt if I sometimes chose one over the other for convenience. My moms side would usually use her name and my dads side would use his when referring to me. This also caused problems during birthdays and holidays because sometimes family members would write me checks and only include one last name.
Please consider only one... I really feel that my parents did me a disservice. It also made getting married more exciting because I got to let go of the result of a disagreement that my parents had, ultimately making me the one who'll had to deal with it.

I'm not saying that you would hyphenate because you are in a disagreement. This is just my experience.

My daughter's best friend is adopted. Let me assure you, her last name is that of her adoptive parents... Not her birth parents. It's bound and legal. It will never be another, until she gets married and chooses to change it then.
 If you arent going to give him his wish of naming baby his  legal name/adoptive name/whatever you want to call it, then give baby your last name.

I would go with the adopted last name because obviously it has way more meaning to him. And if you're in a good standing relationship then my opinion is to give the baby his last name, especially if he's going to be a constant in the baby's life.

If u ever travel with ur child and they don't have ur last name u could have difficulty crossings boarders.

I say no. My 8yr old has her biological fathers last name. He is not a part of her life and shows no interest in her. I'm currently married and pregnant to her amazing step father, whom she considers her father. She wants to change her last name desperately, so she will be the same as the rest of her  family, but she can't unless her bio dad consents to it and let's my husband adopt her... and it breaks my heart how upset and excluded she feels. 
I wish I knew then what I know now. If you guys get married it will be easier to change the child's name to the fathers. if not and he ends up being absentee at least the child will have the same last name as their mother .

My boyfriend and I didn't even hesitate when we discussed this! It's his child too! I've always been raised no matter what the circumstances are the child should get the fathers name! Just like when we decide to get married I will take his last name as well!
