Thoughts on crib bumpers?

What are everyone's thoughts on crib bumpers? I have heard both sides and I'm really torn. Are they safe or not for baby and are they necessary or more for looks?

We didn't use one with my first and he never got stuck in his crib until he was over a year old. And he was awake. And he did it on purpose. 😕

I've never heard or read that any are safe (even the mesh ones). I'm surprised they still sell them.

I never used them because once my son could move himself around he liked shoving his face against the side. He's almost 6 and he still does it to the sides of his loft bed now.

I don't like them, I use them only while the baby is very small and not moving a lot. I tried the breathable mesh ones and hated them. They always slid down the crib and my son used them to step on and climb up the side of the crib. My husband wanted to try some regular ones with our second so we got some thin Winnie the Pooh ones and we'll see how they do but I will definitely be on edge because I do have a fear of something horrible to happen to baby while I'm sleeping.

I am using one when shes born and taking it away when she can move about herself i think longs you keep a eye on them you are fine my family and friends used one or using one and havr had no issues with them.

I heard too many bad reports about traditional bumpers so I opted for the mesh, breathable ones. Not as cute, but still keeps baby from getting legs/arms stuck between crib slats while ensuring he/she can breathe if they roll over face first into it.

I think they may be more for looks but I'm not 100% sure! I kept my 1st son in a pack-n-play next to me in my room for almost an entire year & plan to do the same with this one!
