birth defect test

ive heard you can get tested for birth defects . But some people said you need to have to needle in your abdomen to take the fluid from the baby to test. & to test the placenta. But ive also heard you can just get your blood drawn from the arm & its shows if the baby will have defects or not. & also shows the gender. Which is true?
