Will MIL get baby sick??

My MIL has lived in the Middle East for about 3 years now. She's the first one coming to see the new baby and will probably be here for its birth. I have no doubt she's up on immunizations but I'm terrified she will pick up something awful from the plane rides! MERS, the flu, anything! I'm so worried, can we do anything??  I wish she would wait 6 months but she already has her tickets.

You'll be fine! If your worried, just tell her you're worried about airport germs, I'm sure she wouldn't mind changing clothes before holding baby.  I'm a teacher, so I plan on changing before I hold the baby when I get home from work.

I spent a 9 month deployment in the Middle East, it's not as dirty as the media portrays it to be. She has just as much chance catching a cold/flu etc on a plane ride from state to state just as much as she does from overseas to states. It all depends on her immune system. I don't blame you for being overly cautious though. Just talk to her about it.

Tbh, I wouldn't overly worry. If she shows up and she is visibly sick, ask her to stay away until it goes away, she will understand that. I fly several times a year, including the Middle East, and I've personally never gotten sick.

Ask her to start taking some airborne..  I'm sure she will keep up with washing her hands.. It's not her first rodeo with a newborn I'm sure.
