OK to skip health insurance?

Is it OK to go without healthcare coverage of you have the means to obtain it? More importantly, if you opt out, what's your backup plan for unexpected serious medical conditions?

Under the Affordable Care Act, they're going to start penalizing you on your taxes if you don't have health insurance. In 2015, that's the higher of 2% of your income or $325 per person up to $975 per family. The fee is going up in 2016.

I'm an RN and quit my job 3 months ago to travel 😁 Needless to say I lost my health insurance. I decided to purchase my own insurance in the event of a serious medical emergency. It sucks because it is so expensive and they won't lower it because I'm expected to make "too much" money. I ended up purchasing a 'catastrophic' plan which you have to be under 30 and relatively healthy. It rarely covers anything other than preventative or serious medical issues. Works for now and makes me feel better knowing that if I have an emergency I won't go into debt with thousands of dollars.
