Baby Shower Guest List

I feel awkward my MIL has told me she is throwing a shower for the baby but it's only going to be her friends and that only my husband and mother can come that I know. Of course I am grateful for the kind gesture but find it weird that I'm not able to invite anyone I know. Has anyone else had a shower were they weren't aloud any say in the guest list? Just curious to see others expierences.
