When to notify family

Question

When did you tell your family you were in labor. As soon as you checked into the hospital? When you were a certain number of centimeters? I'm not sure exactly what I want to do, because I don't want people to show up at the hospital until after the baby is born, however I don't want them to know that I waited so long to to tell them he was on his way.

I'm thinking if I let the in-laws know too early, they might show up, and even though the staff won't let them in the room against my wishes, it would make me nervous to know people are sitting around waiting for me. I just want peace.

I won't tell them anything until after my husband and I have had time alone with our baby :)

I wouldn't tell anyone I was in labor. It's just going to be me and my husband. We'll start making phone calls when we're ready but if anyone pitches a fit about it they can stay home.

I say tell them when you are sure you are in active labor and let them know you will tell them when baby is here so they can come visit. Or let them know you are ready to push so they can be at the hospital by the time it is all done.

We waited until after our baby was born. She had some complications during labor and after she was born. I didn't even get to see her until the next day. We told our families after we got to spend some alone time with her.

Omg i feel like I could have literally written the exact same thing!!! I have been wondering how to deal with this as well, especially since both of our families live here in the same town as us. Also, how do yall handle social media? We told them not to post anything and that we want to be the ones to make the announcement.

We made phone calls to family after we made it through triage and were in an L&D room. Neither my parents nor his live close, so no worries of anyone showing up unwanted. And we called with the news of his birth after our bonding time (so about an hour after he was born).

We had talked to family before to know what they wanted too. Everyone wanted to know regardless of time of day, so they got 2:30am "He's here!" phone calls.

Once we was here, my mom bought a plane ticket to come visit for 10 days. My in-laws had already planned a short visit for about 5 weeks after due date.

We will probably tell as soon as it happens. My parents love to be present for EVERYTHING. His side of the family probably not. It's my parents 4th grand but my first. So my parents have rescheduled their vacation and what not.

We didn't tell anyone, I'm 2 days pp and I just sent pictures of the baby to those I wanted to know first and then posted on Facebook with a title of “peekaboo look what I did” . I also had him at 12:46am lol so that helped too.

I plan on telling my family when I go into labour but explain that we will call when baby arrives and when they can come visit. They're all very laid back so i don't expect them to visit till we ask them to! X
