Irregular Periods

My period is very irregular. It shows up whenever it wants to. I can go months and months without a period. What does this mean for my husband and I as we are trying to conceive. Doctor told me that my vagina appears very healthy. Should I ask for meds to help regulate my period or will that affect me negatively. I know that no period means no ovulation which means no baby. I would highly appreciate any responses, suggestions or advice.
