6 month gift?!?!

So my boyfriend brought up giving gifts which I never thought about. He asked what I wanted and I just told him we don't have to give gifts and he seemed upset and he said it's a big deal ( his longest relationship and my first) so I told him a candle ( candles are kinda my favorite thing other than him) and he said 6 months not 1 date. And he wouldn't tell me what kind of gift we are supposed to give or what he wants the best I got out of him was a relationship gift which I don't know what that means. Help!
