Requesting Records?

This may be a stupid question...but, when you are in L&D, do they write down everything that's going on? Like, if I requested my records would there be a report with "we broke her water at this time..she had to have oxygen at this time..started pushing at this time" etc., etc.? I had a really bad and dangerous delivery and I was either not mentally present most of the day or they just didn't tell me anything because of my anxiety. And I want to remember my daughter's entry into this world but I really don't know what happened that day. Plus, I think that reading what the doctors wrote will help me cope with my traumatic experience--because we were never really given a whole lot of detail about my condition--so, for me, knowing will help me get past it. So can I request those records? Are those records even a real thing?

Yes they do..they should have...it's like a diary they called it charting..it includes everything that happen what did they do..it protects you and the professional if something bad happens..it can be use as an evidence in the court or something.

I was in and out of consciousness during my L&D also. I barely remember anything after being taken to the operating room for an emergency csection. I spent the first three days in ICU, followed by another week being monitored on heavy drugs. I feel for you. I was told by another doctor (not connected to that hospital) that when I request my medical records, I need to specifically ask for the OR and anesthetician's records, too.

The way you request them in the U.S. is through the medical records dept. you'll have to sign a medical release form (might be available online), then they can print or copy them for you.

Yes you have every right to those records. You are actually the owner of your own medical record. You should have no problem accessing them!

They absolutely document everything. Clinical notes/Charting is what you'll need to request. You have EVERY right to request copies. They'll most likely make you sign a records release form... I think it's a great idea, just let them know why you want them and I'm sure they won't give you any trouble!

Should be able to under the freedom of information act. I'm in the military so I can just ask for my record but idk how it is for others. Probably depends on the hospital. I'd call their records department and ask them what to do.

I don't know about requesting your own records, but my daughter was in the hospital and had to have a test, which I was present for and was shown the results but when I asked for a copy, was told they couldn't give them out.
