Latch help?

It looks like baby has a good latch but my nipples are sore when he sucks and after a feeding, I still feel the sensation of his suck and nipples feel a bit sore. Is this normal for beginners? What can I do?

Answer

Does your nipple look the same when it comes out as when it goes in? Or does it have a ridge along the whole thing or look like a new tube of lipstick? While its normal for the nipple to look longer it should still look relatively the same when it comes out. Even if she has a deep latch it could mean other things need correcting. If it looks good it may just mean that your nipples still need to toughen up. Get some lansinoh and put it on after each feeding.

Does he suck on just the nipple or is most of the areola in his mouth, too? Sometimes, especially when my breast are really "full", my baby won't take as much of them into her mouth and it hurts me (while she seems to have no problems eating that way). It helps if you sort of shove in more of your breast when he opens his mouth if that makes sense. Of course there are also nipple shields that you can buy, but my lactation consultant recommended to try other solutions first.
