Brown discharge (light) during sex

I just had sex with my boyfriend and when we were cleaning up we noticed a LITTLE bit of brown discharge. However, when I went to the bathroom there was nothing. I am supposed to start my period in the next few days. Is that why there was a little bit of discharge during sex?
