Foster parents?

Are there any foster parents on here, that could shear their stories with me. About the process to become one, and how its been? I really would like to become a foster parent to what are commonly known as " Crack babies" or babies that are abandand at the hospitals at birth.

I work with kids in the foster care system on the mental health side. You dont really get to pick which kids you want they normally just place kids where there is space available in an approved home. If you are interested you should contact the department of children's services in your area.  There are a lot of things that take place before your approved however like background and home checks as well as extensive classes. Hope this helps

I am currently a foster parent in CA and I chose to foster through an agency rather then directly through the county simply because you receive much more support and you have your own advocat through an agency. It took me 1 month to complete the qualifications and classes and become licensed and 2 weeks after that I got my first placement. I'm currently on my second placement, my first placement was a sibling set both under the age of 2. Amazing little kids, absolutely no health issues or exposure to drugs or alcohol the parents just mentally couldn't get it together. That placement did end in false accusations towards me but luckily I have an amazing agency that stood up and fought for me. Now I have a 2 year old little boy that was exposed to drugs and alcohol and is suffering greatly developmentally but I love being able to work with him and do my best to help him over come his delays. He is scheduled to reunify with his rehabilitated biological mother in the next 2 weeks. I absolutely love being a foster mom and I currently have no children of my own. I do it because I want to offer a loving safe home even only for a short time in their lives, I feel as if I am helping and making a difference. Before you become a foster parent please do your research and understand ALL the challenges after you become licensed. Sorry my story is long feel free to ask any questions.

My MIL was a foster parent. It took forever for her to finally become one. She had to go through soooo much stuff (which is good). She had 2 of my brother living with her still too. She had to have a room for each foster kid. My brothers had to end up sharing a room so the kids could have their own. She finally just finished the basement which was basically a 3 bedroom apartment. She had this baby at one point who's parents were horrible. She had him for 8 months and he was 2 months old when she got him. They had a bond. Well the judge gave custody back to the parents and 2 weeks later the baby was found dead in his crib with a plastic bag over his head.  This about killed her.  She asked for no more babies. They didn't send her anymore either. Now she did get a 2 year old and had her for years and ended up adopting her.  So there are pros and cons. Just make sure you are emotionally prepared for ANY outcome!!

I was a foster parent for 10 yrs ..stopped doing it because where I live the system is shit type they only call you when their regulars have a full house. I was doing it in hopes of adoption but they would call the ppl who were only in it for the money first..these women would have 6-8 kids already and would still call them

My parents do foster care. It's very hard, emotionally, though. I'm not sure the exact process but basically you do your research find an organization you want to work with and apply. You'll have to do an interview and then training, a lot more of it if you're working with special needs children. Hope that helps!
