Spotting ...cramps

AF was to start on 8/23. 3 days prior I started spotting (brown only when I wipe). Saturday morning I woke up with excruciating cramps, I'll rate them. An 8 on 10 scale pain level. They lasted for about two hours. My husband wanted to take me to the emergency room but I felt silly going for cramps. I rarely get them and when I do they aren't this severe but I kept telling myself I was being a baby. I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow  just wondering if anyone has dealt with something like this. What their outcome was.
