Hair Dye & Pregnancy

Ok-I'm usually not so picky about my hair, but with it growing so fast, my roots need serious help! I usually have my hair stylist friend dye it for me, but she moved away..and oh yeah, I'm very pregnant. :) (but not far enough to where I'd like to wait for after baby comes)

I've heard dying your hair during pregnancy is dangerous because of the fumes and chemicals-but I'm wondering if things have changed? I've also heard because of the hormones it might not take, or turn out a completely unexpected color.... AND could diy at home boxed dye kits be worth the try??
