I recently got into a huge fight with my mom (I'm 21) where she kicked me out and she choked me (the first time she's ever done that) while calling me the most ungrateful thing she's ever met. This isn't the first time she's said hurtful things to me though, back in high school after failing one class she called me a "pathetic ungrateful piece of shit!" So I called her out on it (because I have two siblings who I promise you have NEVER heard my mom speak to them that way!) and she told me that it's just a thing mothers do and I'll end up saying the same to my children someday.
